I've been away for a while, sorry about that! I've got a lot going on these days...new baby...eldest starting school...etc. My sewing time has been a bit sporadic and you'll have to forgive me for spending my free time sewing and not posting on my blog. I think with school starting now, I'll have a regular schedule again and will begin dusting off this blog.

I finished my Bloom Bloom Pow quilt, I'll post about that soon. And I have 85 of the 100 Tula Pink 100 Blocks done. I will post about that soon too.

My post today is about a designer friend of mine who's working with this awesome new company Modern Yardage. They specialize in print-on-demand modern fabric at a fantastic price! Allison Beilke designed this fabulous collection called Business and Leisure and asked several of us to make projects with it. I was delighted to finally be able to put this collection into use. Not to mention I've been attracted to the red/aqua color combo for a while. Perfect solution!

In the works are a sew-a-long with members of the Milwaukee Modern Quilt Guild of Elizabeth Hartman's Sewing Circle Tote. I decided to make mine with Allison's cool fabric.

Here it is:

I also made a coordinating wide-open pouch by Noodlehead. I'm pretty happy with this little bag too.

In fact, it's been much harder to get this post up!

So here's my quilt top. I totally love it!! I think after all my purple problems, the purple bloom fits in perfectly. I am hopeful that after trimming I won't need to piece a back and I can get right to basting and quilting. Still not sure how I shall quilt it, or what to use for binding, but it's coming right a long!

I've also made good progress on the Chevron Baby Blanket. The pattern is free on the PurlBee website. I have two more colors to go and it's finished. Yay.

My LQS is doing a 100 blocks of summer club to make all of Tula Pink's blocks in her new book. I love the idea of working on that, but I have no idea how baby #3 is going to crash our naptime routine. I was also a bit overwhelmed at how to begin fabric choices, but after a suggestion by my good quilting buddy, I think I'm going to use my awesome stash of Glimma! I certainly have enough fabric to make all the blocks and if not, the shop is close by. I'm actually feeling pretty excited about it!

Now if I could just decide on a block to make for Flags of Boston.......I have to get that done by Friday. I'm just being rather indecisive.

That's it for now, linking up!
Not to mention more darn rain. It's getting a little sickening staying inside all the time. Especially when your 2 year old is refusing to nap and is being rather demanding. I'm hoping it's his two-year molars and that he hasn't given up naps before the new baby arrives.

In any case, check out what was sitting on my front lawn eating a bunny. This guy! My husband opened the front door to go on his morning bike ride and this Cooper's hawk puffed up and screeched at him. Needless to say he went around to the back door. Now I know why I haven't seen as many chipmunks and bunnies around, these hawks must be taking care of them.

We had our monthly guild sew day on Saturday and I got a ton done! I'm still working on a secret quilt, but I also got most of the strips pieced for Lee's Bloom Bloom Pow QAL. I am very excited for tomorrow's post when we start cutting out 60 degree triangles and piecing the blooms. Really glad to have recaptured my sewing mojo again.

I should mention that I wasn't really happy with my previous purple selection so I made a trip to my LQS. Thankfully the ladies there helped me, it took us a while though. AND.....I was pleased as punch to see that they had Lotta Jansdotter's entire Glimma collection, including the coordinating solids! YIPPEE! How awesome is that! I bought a yard of the entire collection. Between that and a fellow guilder ordering me some Color Me Retro, I had a great fabric weekend.

I'm sure I'll be back there soon, they were getting Malka's new collection and they had Indian Summer. Since my guild's challenge fabric wasn't in yet, I see another exciting fabric purchase in my future.

TTFN, I'm linking up.

Well that cold really wiped me out. It turned into a sinus infection and since I can only take Tylenol and regular Sudafed, I didn't get much relief. My pounding headache meant a lot of resting for me. I lost almost two weeks to this beast.

But alas, I am doing Lee's Bloom Bloom Pow QAL, rainbow style. Nothing can keep me that down!

This is my first quilt pulled almost entirely from my stash. Unfortunately I really didn't like any purple combos so I'm making a trip to my LQS this week to get a better purple combo. My mom had an "aha" moment when she said, "I see why you keep buying more fabric." LOL, yep, even when you have a ton, you still could be missing something that ties the whole quilt together.

Besides cutting this quilt, I whipped up a couple of bow-ties for the boys for Easter. Unfortunately one of the bows was lost, not on my watch of course. Hoping it still turns up...grrrr.
As usual, lots going on. I finally got my sewing mojo back, but now I caught the kids' cold. Ugh.

In any case, I've completed a few blocks this past week, met Tula Pink and am finishing up organizing my very own craft room!

My local guild's bee blocks are finished, I'm all caught up. Both very fun blocks to make.

Lots going on in the Milwaukee area, my LQS hosted Tula Pink for a talk about her design process and a trunk show. It was very inspiring and she is soooooo funny. She has a new book coming out soon, 100 Modern Quilt Blocks and the quilts she showed were awesome. I'm definitely buying that book, you all know how I like a good sampler quilt.

We finished another room in the basement to get ready for baby #3 and to give me my own space for crafting. It's awesome! I'm still putting a few boxes away and I have some larger fabric pieces to put on cardboard, but otherwise it's done. It's so great to be able to see my stash and to just leave a project out that I'm working on. The design wall was probably the best addition to my sewing endeavors. I can't wait to really start laying out quilts on it! I've been in my new room sewing up a storm.

So I can't really show you those quilt blocks yet, my current project is a pattern that's going to be published in Lee's new book. Once she gives me the ok, I'll be able to show you pics.

Three reasons: 1. I've had no real WIP's to show you, just finishes. 2. I'm moving my craft room so it's hindering progress on projects. 3. I went to QuiltCon!!!

So let's start with this new craft room. Here is what my fabric stash looks like and here is what is going to consume me for a while. I'm going to put my stash onto these comic boards so that they'll be all organized. Yippee.

Here's what I worked on and finished in preparation for QuiltCon. A Triple Zip Pouch and an Ideas Pouch for my iPad. Both turned out great.
And.....I went to QuiltCon! It was AWESOME. I'm going to avoid reliving the horrible trip down there because once we got there it was really great. Let's see....good friends....beautiful fabric...amazing quilts...inspiring lectures and a kick-ass workshop. Not to mention the food and weather in Austin were pretty darn good too.

Here's the goodies I bought. Mostly fabric, I finally got my paws on some OakShotts! Needless to say, I can't wait to tear into them. I also picked up some perle cotton, embroidery floss and Anna Maria patterns. Yep, that's an autograph and yep I got a picture with her.

I took an awesome textile printing class with Lotta Jansdotter, my fabric designing hero. I managed to contain myself and not act like a dork. She really liked my work and asked to take a picture OF MY WORK!! EEP! It was so much fun and I can't wait to hit my local art store up for more supplies. I also made it to her pop-up shop and bought a bunch of her stuff. FUN! Here are a few pics.
It was awesome making some new friends too. I won a prize for completing all my blocks in my Flickr bee so I met up with our Bee Mama, Julie. It was great meeting her in person and look at this lovely prize. She happens to live in Ft Worth, the home of MadelineTosh yarn which my local shop can't keep in stock. I got this beautiful Tosh Merino, a single-ply gorgeous red yarn. And it's all mine!
Sooooo here are my WIP's. I'm making hexies, yay, and about to start pattern testing with these triangles of fabric. I won't be able to share that for a while. Keep ya posted.
So far, I absolutely love it! It's like embroidering on my quilt, an awesome combo of two of my favorite things. I will definitely be doing more hand quilting.
One more block and I'm done with my online bees. Not sure I'll be joining an online bee again anytime soon. I have my local quilt guild bee to look forward to instead. Here is one block, I need to make another one with purple on the outside and orange on the inside. Very putzy paper-piecing.

My LQS had Kona Club last night and it was so very fun! Not only do we celebrate Kona solids, but we share ideas and happenings in the quilt world. My LQS owner informed us she booked Tula Pink to give a talk in March. Yippee!! Tula has a new book out in May and the shop carries her fabrics, it should be great. It's really awesome to see a modern quilter coming to our neck of the woods.

I also picked up some good stuff....my LQS has started making packs of 2.5" squares for making 1" hexies!! And I picked up a couple of charm packs to cut into 2.5" squares. I'm catching the hexie fever. I also bought a new quilting hoop online that should help me with my hand quilting. My 6" plastic hoop keeps popping off, argh. I tried a circular 18" hoop but that was really uncomfortable and I couldn't grip it well enough so this oval size should help. You'd think my long arms would work, but alas, I had to keep putting the hoop down, not good.
It's quilted with a few straight lines but as you can see from this picture, I'm about to start some hand quilting. Then onto the binding, therefore lots of hand work ahead.

I have a couple of small projects coming up next. I'm making the Idea Pouch from MichellePatterns for my iPad and then a matching triple zip pouch. I bought the Idea Pouch pattern over the holidays and I'm participating in the Triple Zip A-Long over at A Quilters Table. Super excited to get working on these two. No surprise, I picked some Bella to use for these.
We got hit with the stomach flu last week so I went 3 days without touching it. One of which was my guild sew day/holiday party (big bummer). I was really flying along too, but alas, I'm back at it. I tried to float my blocks a little bit. Not sure quite if it's what I was hoping for, in retrospect I should have varied the block size more. In any case I like how it's looking.

I am hoping to hand quilt this but the local shops around here don't seem to carry a good selection of perle cotton #8. I am hoping to find someone with a color card to borrow from, otherwise I'll have to break down and buy one. Not sure I want to attempt to color match from a computer.

Finished this cowl over the weekend. Very happy with how it turned out.

I made 8 random blocks and then I'm going to asymmetrically place them into the quilt top with solids and some of the gray-toned fabrics in the collection. I want it to have a "pieced-back" look. I'm not overly happy with the blue block. I think I'm going to add a solid around the pinwheel to make it pop more.

Our guild got mostly blue and yellow fabrics but I have very little pink in my house and I really loved the pink prints. I think I did the pink justice but I need a little more of that fabulous magenta. I might use that as the binding. In any case, I'll have lots of leftover fabric for my stash.

Speaking of leftovers....I'm using scraps from this quilt to make a covered notebook. My local guild is having our holiday party on Saturday and we're doing a swap. Very excited about this swap, I've been meaning to make one of these!

Up next (although I should work on my UFO's) is another pattern testing quilt for my mom. She picked out the colors, you'll be able to see that right away! Not what I would have picked but I think they are beautiful colors.

Trying to be better about my quilty UFO's, so here they are:
Star Wars quilt (binding only)
Echo Hexagon Quilt
Ugh, they are all wrapped and mostly given away. Thankfully they were well received.

Speaking more of last year, I reached my goal of finishing 12 quilts, in fact I finished 15! My goal for next year is to learn how to FMQ. Gottta get over my fears.

I also embroidered and made this needle/project case for my bestie. She's a big Dr Who fan and it went well with my "knitting" theme for her gift. She got me two fabulous Lotta Jansdotter candles!!! They are going to be perfect for the new sewing room, coming in 2013.

On tap, I've got 8 blocks cut for the Modern Quilt Guild's Madrona Road fabric challenge. I'm excited to get started on this sampler quilt.

I've been knitting up a storm, I finished one of my socks I posted about several weeks ago and I'm working on a cowl. I don't know if it's because it's winter, but I've been really enthusiastic about knitting lately. So I dragged the boys to the local yarn shop and bought some yarn for a blanket for the new baby. It's Spud and Chloe, Outer. Aren't the colors fabulous? It also feels superb. Can't wait to get started on it.
WHAT???Wow, it took me an hour and a half to just sew this little pencil case. Everything was cut already. Talk about issues.

Vinyl is clearly my new enemy. Ugh. I'm using the tutorial from Make it Love it to assemble these pouches for Christmas gifts. I thought her tip of using tape on the feet of my machine would get the vinyl to slip right through. WRONG! So then I tried freezer paper, that worked but pulling the paper off was a pain. I decided to try tape, well that worked but it was still hard to peel off the tape. I think the tape is the lesser of two evils, but it's still going to take me forever to make these pouches. Ugh.

I did learn a great tip on how to machine sew buttons and that worked great. All you do is drop the feed dogs and manually adjust your zig zag stitch to fit in the button holes and voila! Buttons in seconds. No hand sewing, super sweet.

Will look pretty cute with pencils stuffed in it's mouth!!

I am very happy with how they have turned out so far. I'm giving them as gifts tomorrow and although that seems like pressure, I'm not sweating it all. I think I'll get at least two of them done today and will only have one left tomorrow afternoon. Cookies are baked and white elephant present wrapped, I'm totally under control.

I also started another pair of socks. It's my first time knitting with Koigu yarn and now I can see why it's so popular. It's ridiculously soft and I love the colors!! I'm going to try an easy lace pattern, not ready for those crazy lace charts yet. But I do love knitting socks on 8" circular needles and I really needed a project to work on when I'm too tired to pull out the sewing machine but not too tired to watch tv. Ha!

I'm thinking hard about what to make for the Modern Quilt Guild's Madrona Road Challenge. I think I'm going to make a sampler of some sorts. Not sure about using the Farmers Wife blocks, but some type of blocks are in order. I saw a sneak peak of a GORGEOUS sampler quilt made with Madrona Road and haven't been able to get that out of my head. Any ideas out there?
I'm really having one of those weeks where I'd rather just pretend things aren't blowing up all around me. It'll get better soon, I hope.

In the mean time, I am feeling extremely lucky that the placemats I was coveting on Flickr in the Modern She Made 2 Swap are MINE!!! They came from England yesterday!! Along with these awesome coasters and basket full of chocolate. I'm going to tear into these chocolates real soon. My partner was Jennie who blogs over at JenniesThreads. I'm still a little in shock that I actually got what I was secretly hoping for. YAY! Twice now, I've had really great partners, I'm definitely doing this swap again. I can only hope my partner likes her mini quilt and pin cushion too.

Now on to what I'm working on this week. I've been making these embroidered zip pouches for gifts. I had to try to patterns before I figured out which would work best. No surprise, I'm going with an Elizabeth Harman pattern. She's really great and her patterns make so much sense to me. 2 pouches down and 4 to go!
Coming up is an iPad case, I bought a pattern at a Black Friday sale that I couldn't resist. I'm also going to make some monster pencil cases for Christmas gifts.
Well I can check 2 of the quilts off my list now! I finished this baseball quilt and already gave it to the intended recipient. I got a squeal over it and my SIL even took it over to my FIL to show him too, she liked it so much. They are big baseball fans. I also got an email from my MIL who said my quilt was a real hit. Phew! For whatever reason I get kinda nervous when I design my own quilt with the recipient in mind. You just never know if they're going to like it and when you put that much effort in....I worry. Thankfully I was worried for nothing.

I am working on this mini quilt for the Modern She Made Swap 2. The them is "triangle" and I thought the compass needed more triangles so I made flying geese for the borders. I am hoping to get those sewn on along with corner pieces and then baste it today. I saw that my partner collects pin cushions, so as an extra, I'm going to try and whip one up for her. I have to mail it between the 15-19 and I'm thinking the 19th is probably going to be the date since I'm adding that pin cushion.

This weekend my LQG has it's monthly sew day. We decided to make a charity quilt for QuiltCon using extra blocks from their challenge. We are going to dedicate Saturday to working on that. I'll be sure to post about that soon!
I'm no longer panicking about this baseball quilt. In fact, I think it's looking pretty good.

Machine appliqueing those logos was pretty easy, aside from running out of thread during naptime, argh. The red twill tape was a bit more of a struggle. For the cross seams, I sewed the ends together to prevent fraying and then I laid them under the curved "seams" to get them positioned. That meant I had to move the curved seam to the side to tack down the cross seams. Getting the curved seam over the cross seams wasn't to bad, it was just hard to keep the stitching in the middle of the twill tape. Overall I'm happy with the results.

I used Aurifil 20# white thread for the quilting and surprisingly, there was nary a pucker even though the stitching was close and I was moving the quilt all over the place. The back is just a RK novelty baseball print. Should be finished and washed in time for Saturday.

I also started a Mariner's Compass block, "Which Way North," for the Modern She Made Swap 2. It took a bit of calculating to get the rainbows right but it's all cut out and ready to go. I'm going to make some sort of border too. I'm leaning towards another HST border. Again, I won't have any problem meeting my 11/15 deadline. Then it's on to Christmas presents. Yay.
They are having a boy and are using baseball as the theme for his room. She is a Yankees fan and he is a Brewers fan. So I'm incorporating the team logos on a white quilt. Hopefully I haven't lost all my applique skills. Then I'm going to use red twill tape to make the stitching of a baseball on the quilt. Wish me luck! The shower is next week, I really gotta get cracking! Did I mention my baby is turning 2 on Sunday? Never a dull moment.

It was really great working with these beautiful fabrics designed by Allison Beilke for the Mod in Milwaukee Challenge.

I decided long ago that I wanted to spell out Milwaukee, so I purchased Elizabeth Hartman's Refrigerator Magnets Pattern. I was pretty scared to try this new technique, but as usual, my fears were unwarranted, the pattern was easy! I had to blow up the letters to get them to a decent size for a lap-sized quilt. Then I had to futz with the spacing to get the letters reasonably centered.

Inspired by a quilt that Rita of Red Pepper quilts made, I chose to make an HST border. I like how it gives the quilt a little more color and uses more of the Milwaukee-inspired fabric.

Wavy line quilting highlights the "great city on a great lake" catch phrase referring to Milwaukee and over the letters/HST's I quilted the letter M.

I am thrilled with the finished results (44" x 64") and hope it's your favorite for the Throw Size Quilt category.Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05697682439760192817noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-385663149858242591.post-53596552892275074232012-10-24T13:31:00.001-07:002012-10-24T13:31:46.729-07:00WIP, LOTS OF PROGRESSIt's been a busy week and I've got good progress to show.

My Milwaukee quilt is almost finished. I have two more corners to bind and then it's ready to enter it into the Mod in Milwaukee contest. Sometimes I can't believe how fast I can crank out a quilt, I think this took me about two and a half weeks. I'm feeling pretty good about my other deadlines.

I made this block for a fellow guilder. It's from the 99 Modern Blocks book. I've got a couple more bee blocks to make by then end of the week, then I'll be caught up. One more month for all my bees, it's been a fun year for bees.

Up next is a mini quilt for the Modern She Made Swap Round 2. So far no one likes the purple fabric. Not sure I do either, but I'm trying to sneak out a rainbow and I have no purple in my stash. Maybe I'll just leave purple out.

But I'm back!

I finished one of my Star Wars Quilts.

And it's already been put to good use. Here's the happy recipient.

I also finished this postage stamp block for my local guild bee and then proceeded to lose it. I know it's hiding somewhere in one of my piles but sheesh, I'm kinda embarrassed. I don't usually lose things. I thought the block was pretty easy though and I learned a new technique. We used Elizabeth Hartman's fusible interfacing method. It was a breeze! Gosh I love her.

On to my WIP. I'm in the midst of this Milwaukee quilt for the Mod in Milwaukee Challenge. I'm very excited with how it's looking so far. I need to even up these rows and put spacers in between. Then I am adding the lakefront and a HST-type border. We've got guild sew day this weekend so I'm hoping to get a lot done.

The weather has been extremely nice, so today I spent some time pulling out dead plants and trimming back other plants. Hopefully I won't fall asleep in choir practice today from all the fresh air!

I've had another busy week processing tomatoes and picking apples.

I do have this nice stack of hexies coming along. I am really getting excited to keep this project moving along.

However, I have two quilts coming down the pipeline. A baby quilt is in my near future and I need to get going on my Mod in Milwaukee challenge quilt. EEK!

Now to make some squash soup! I'm linking up!
With the start of school and crazy potty training, Wednesday's have been hectic and I've forgotten or just didn't have time to post. Ugh.

I've still had some sewing time thankfully! I've finished several bee blocks. Free piecing the "girlie" block was really fun despite being way out of my comfort zone.

I have also mailed out packages for my own month in one of my bees. Here is my test block. Can't for them to start arriving in the mail.

I also finished quilting both of my Star Wars quilts, they are ready for hand binding. I'm hoping to have posts about their finish in the near future. I did however, finish these pillowcases. Yay!
I'm sorry for neglecting my blog! I've been super busy (stressed out) and for whatever reason I haven't gotten my act together to post anything. I've gotten bee blocks done, my Star Wars quilts are basted and have a productive weekend ahead. I promise I'll post again very soon.Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05697682439760192817noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-385663149858242591.post-4678232040408241002012-09-05T13:52:00.001-07:002012-09-05T13:52:10.907-07:00WIP PLANNING EDITIONWell I'm feeling rather unproductive in terms of sewing projects. But alas, I have a list of excuses, stay-cation, redecorating, start of school, waiting for fabric and knitting. They all have gotten in the way of quilting.

I am however about to cut into this Star Wars fabric to go into the newly decorated boys room.

Here are my plans for their quilts. I want it to have a comic strip feel instead of doing chunky blocks. The plan is to stagger the top four fabrics in 24" x 36" pieces and 24" x 18" pieces with 1.5" strips in between. (Three rows of 24" x 54", makes about a 54" x 75" quilt) I feel like it's a lot of black though. Do you think I should use black as the strips or Kona Lagoon? I was thinking of using black for the strips and Lagoon as the binding but naturally, I'm second guessing myself.

I'm using the yellow/black Star Wars fabric and the solid yellow for the back. Or then again the yellow might look good as the strips in between the big prints....decisions....decisions...

Would love some input.

This Friday I'm going the Wisconsin Quilt Expo in Madison. Hopefully I'll find some good fabric. In any case, the company will be good!

Linking up!
